If you haven’t heard, Mount to Coast is having a moment. We first saw the brand at The Running Event in 2024, where it had one unreleased model to its name: the R1. It was simple and sleek, positioned as a road ultrarunning shoe. Since then, the brand has released a baseline model for most purposes, everything from stability to trail to gravel running. They’re still heavily involved in the ultrarunning space, but they’re seeing widespread adoption on the road side as an ever-reliable option over tons of miles.

Part of that is because of big names taking down big records over bigger and bigger distances in a single pair of Mount to Coast. Jamil Coury, 600 miles in the versatile H1 for the month-long Chipotle Burrito Challenge. Justin Montague, who took a single pair of R1 854 miles through the aggressive 17-day JOGLE multistage ultra. Most recently, three out of the top five finishers at the Cocodona 250 were wearing the H1 on their feet.

Point being: it’s not just fancy marketing; it’s rock-solid customer reviews backed by real-world performance across any distance. Based out of China, the brand has immediate access to the labs and factories behind innovation in midsole production, something that has allowed it to maneuver more quickly than other well-established brands within the space. That means more models at the cutting edge of the running space, most notably in the incredibly durable yet bouncy CircleCell foam.

As runners and shoe reviewers, that’s exciting for us. And it should be for you, too.

We’ve been testing the brand’s shoes since the beginning, so here are our top picks and why they’ll work for you.

Key Terms In This Review

CircleCell

The brand’s proprietary foam made from organic waste and biomass with energy return comparable to PEBA with far greater durability.

LightCell

A unique hybrid compound injected with pure nitrogen to create a supercritical foam that’s 50% lighter than EVA with 45% higher energy return.

VersaGrip

Outsole rubber found in the H1, featuring exceptional traction and versatility over changing terrain.

Lightstrike

An EVA-based foam used in the mid-range models of Adidas running.

TunedFit Lacing

Zonal lacing system found in most models, allowing for separate fits in the midfoot and forefoot. This allows for accommodation of the foot as it swells and changes shapes over long miles.

ZeroSag

Midsole insert co-developed with BASF. Durable, comfortable and offering impeccable energy return at any temperature, ZeroSag allows for structure and cushioning on the longest runs.

8.5 oz. (242 g) for a USM9 / 7.9 oz. (223 g) for a US W9

Stack Height / Drop

35 mm in heel, 29 mm in forefoot (6 mm drop)

Quite possibly one of the most versatile and best overall running shoes out there, the H1 has been snowballing hype over the past year, and deservedly so. The thing that separates this shoe from the rest is the CircleCell midsole, a material that’s unlike anything else in the running industry. Mount to Coast partnered with chemical giant BASF to create a foam that’s made entirely from renewable feedstock. Sounds gimmicky, but it’s not. The result is a bouncy and energetic ride on par with PEBA, but with far superior durability.

As such, this shoe works great in any condition, from road to trails and back again. The zonal TunedFit lacing allows for a more accommodating fit while allowing for adjustments. The traction is solid in almost any condition. It’s just an incredibly good shoe.

Case in point? Ultrarunner Jamil Coury ran more than 600 sidewalk miles in a single pair for the one-month-long Chipotle burrito challenge. Good luck doing better than that. More proof: Just this week, three out of the top-five finishers at Cocodona 250 were wearing the H1. That’s a lot of running in one shoe, but the H1 can take it all.

At $160, we promise it can’t be beat.

Stack Height/Drop

35 mm in heel, 29 mm in forefoot (6 mm drop)

A collab project with Thomas Neuberger (founder here at Believe in the Run), this is the H1 built with specifications to give you a bit more on the trails. Taking design cues from the Nike Lunarepic (Thomas’s all-time favorite shoe), the BITR H1 features a built-in gaiter designed to keep out dirt and debris. The desert colorway is also unique to this model, but the rest stays the same, delivering the unparalleled performance and durability of the standard version of the shoe. This is a limited-edition run, and a couple of sizes are already gone, so get yours while you still can.

Long runs and daily training

Weight

9.4 oz. (267 g) for a US M9 / W10.5

Stack Height/Drop

42 mm in heel, 36 mm in forefoot (6 mm drop)

The second Mount to Coast model with CircleCell underfoot, the C1 offers more stack height for more comfort over longer miles. Technically, it’s a dual-density midsole, with a top layer of CircleCell and a bottom layer of EVA. Despite the stack height, it’s a bit on the firm side at first run; however, it tends to soften up as the miles accumulate. The design is super clean, the fit is accommodating but adjustable thanks to the TunedFit lacing, and the rocker geometry helps it roll through the stride. Would we like to see an ounce of weight shaved off? Sure, but it’s not a dealbreaker. With the built-in resilience of the CircleCell foam, you’ll be sure to get a ton of miles before moving onto another model.

Daily training, road ultra racing

Weight

8.5 oz (240 g) for a US M9

Stack Height / Drop

35 mm in heel, 27 mm in forefoot (8 mm drop)

The debut model for Mount to Coast, the R1 is a standard daily trainer that can go any distance. First positioned as a road ultrarunning shoe, the R1 was tested on Justin Montague’s feet, who ran a single pair for 854 miles through the aggressive JOGLE multistage ultra, breaking the previous course record by a whopping 40 hours.

Part of that durability is thanks in part to the ZeroSag midsole insert, designed by BASF using materials found in F1 racing pistons. The insert helps stabilize the LightCell midsole foam, a supercritical base material made with pure nitrogen that provides steadfast durability while maintaining impressive energy return after hundreds of miles.

Of course, the shoe also sports the TunedFit lacing system, allowing for forefoot and midfoot adjustment of the double-layered jacquard upper. A solid shoe all around.

Trail running

Weight

9.2 oz. (260g) for a US M9

Stack Height / Drop

36 mm in heel, 32 mm in forefoot (4 mm drop)

The standalone trail model in the Mount to Coast lineup, the T1, offers a few technical upgrades that set it apart from the gravel-friendly H1. Starting with the upper, the T1 features a Kevlar yarn material, which his used in bulletproof vests, so that should tell you something about the durability.

The trail-specific TunedFit lacing features dual cinch cords in both the upper and lower portions of the forefoot and midfoot, allowing for independent adjustments in seconds. The fit allows for a wide range of foot shapes, unlike many other trail shoes, which can feel cramped in the midfoot and toe box. Underneath it all, the outsole comes equipped with a Vibram Megagrip Litebase outsole, one of the most grippy and reliable compounds out there.

As far as the ride, it’s most comparable to the R1, which makes sense since it utilizes the same LightCell compound. All in all, it’s just a comfortable and reliable trail shoe that can handle any condition at any pace.

One note: It runs a bit long, so if you’re in between sizes, go a half size down.

Mount to Coast P1

Daily training with stability

Weight

9.9 oz. (280 g) for a USM9

Stack Height/Drop

37 mm in heel, 27 mm in forefoot (10 mm drop)

Truthfully, we’re not sure why this isn’t the S1, if we’re going by use-case for the naming conventions (H1 = hybrid, R1 = road/racing, T1 = trail). So let’s make sure we’re clear: the P1 is the stability shoe, and the S1 is the daily trainer (though we think the R1 is better).

The P1 has a similar build to those other daily trainers, featuring the standard LightCell midsole and GoFlow rocker geometry. However, for the stability-minded runners, we get a little bit extra with the 3D Archrail in the forefoot, designed to reduce peak forefoot abduction angles and activate the muscle in the arch of the foot. No giant stability pieces or clips, just a simple guiding element and a dual-zone insole. The circular knit upper is super comfortable (even if it is a bit warm), and the full coverage rubber outsole provides solid traction and durability.
