Witness History

The four-minute mile was once thought impossible, for both men and women. When it fell at the feet of Roger Bannister in 1954, it opened the floodgates for over 2,000 boys and men to follow in the half century since.

As it stands today, the current women’s world record stands at 4:07.64, set in 2023 by Kenyan elite Faith Kipyegon. As it stands on June 26, Kipyegon is hoping it doesn’t stand, as she looks to become the first woman in history to break the women’s 4-minute mile as part of the Nike Breaking4 project, a moonshot attempt at writing a new chapter in history.

Nike is no stranger to pushing boundaries. They did it in 2019, when Eliud Kipchoge became the first human ever to break the two-hour mark in the marathon as part of the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna, Austria. In that attempt, Kipchoge was backed by the full weight of Nike’s research, innovation, and development, utilizing the best footwear, fueling, and pacing strategies to cross the line in 1:59.

They’re doing the same for Kipyegon, creating a bespoke track spike (the Nike Victory 2 FK), fully customized for her foot shape and racing preferences, in addition to developing an entire set of futuristic apparel that will divert airflow and seamlessly integrate with her body in motion.

All that’s left is for the stars to align on race day.

When race day rolls around, Kipyegon will find herself on a track in Paris, at the Stade Charléty, ready to run on the evening of Thursday, June 26.

You could be there too, as Nike is welcoming fans to support Faith’s moonshot in person.

Here’s how to watch it – both in person and online. May you witness history, and may the goddess of victory give wings to Faith’s feet as she circles the stadium in this moonshot attempt.
