Adidas Adizero Prime X Evo

Introduction to the Adidas Adizero Prime X Evo

MEG: Last August, Adidas hosted an ultra-distance showcase called Chasing 100 at the Nardò Ring test track in Italy, where elite ultrarunners set out to break the 6-hour barrier for the 100km distance using the Prime X Evo prototype. Our run culture editor was on-hand to witness the event (read his recap), and boy, was it something to behold.

The race started in the dead of night, a pack of elite long-distance runners following the lead Mercedes pace car. Nearly six hours later, the sun rose crimson over the legendary track as South African ultrarunner Sibusiso Kubheka delivered, covering 100km in 5:59:20 and becoming the first athlete to dip under 6 hours for the distance. While the mark was not officially ratified due to event conditions and equipment specifications, it significantly undercut the previous best of 6:05:35 and highlighted what’s possible when world-class endurance meets next-generation innovation.

Naturally, much of the spotlight centered on the shoe: the Adidas Adizero Prime X Evo. The stack height is eye-catching — 50 mm in the heel and 44 mm in the forefoot (6 mm drop). The midsole consists entirely of Lightstrike Pro Evo foam, a TPEE compound said to be 35% lighter and 5% more responsive than standard Lightstrike Pro. Instead of EnergyRods or a traditional carbon plate, Adidas introduced an “Energy Rim,” a stiffening structure along the perimeter of the shoe designed to stabilize the foot within that towering stack of cushioning.

During the Chasing 100 event, Adidas even went so far as to place the shoes in a pressurized canister to keep the microscopic air bubbles inside the midsole foam inflated to a particular PSI. The kept the shoes in the canister right until the moment before the race, so as not to lose any air on account of compression. Pretty wild stuff. I didn’t get all that in my pair, but the rest remains the same.

Up top, a paper-thin translucent mesh keeps weight to a minimum, while the outsole uses a dual-compound system that’s vastly superior to the rubber used in the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 2— Lightraxion paired with Continental rubber in high-wear zones.

The wildest part? My women’s size 7.5 weighed just 4.5 oz (127 g) — lighter than any race-day shoe I own. So the real question becomes: Does all of this elite-level tech translate to the rest of us? I put over 100 miles on the shoe to find out.

What we like about the Adidas Adizero Prime X Evo

MEG: I’ve said this before, but this shoe genuinely feels like it was built straight from my wish list: towering stack height, impressively lightweight, and an undeniably bouncy, playful ride. What more could you want?

The step-in sensation is exactly what you’d expect from something this tall— almost like standing on stilts at first. The midsole feels plush underfoot, yet remarkably light at the same time. It’s a bit of a surreal combination: soft, airy, and spring-loaded all at once.

The upper is paper-thin and exceptionally breathable, yet it manages to feel secure. Despite there being virtually nothing between your foot and the laces, you can cinch them down fairly comfortably without any pressure points. The forefoot is generously roomy, allowing plenty of toe splay—something that feels essential for ultra distances. As someone who prefers a more spacious toe box, I appreciated that extra volume no matter how far I was running.

Out on the road, this shoe delivers a truly unique ride. There’s a brief adjustment period, no doubt, but once you settle into a steady rhythm— especially on long, straight stretches— it’s hard to imagine a better companion. I initially worried that the absence of a traditional carbon fiber plate would mean sacrificing that snappy, propulsive feel I love in race-day shoes. Surprisingly, the perimeter stiffening system delivers a similar effect, if not better. Instead of a rigid plate directly underfoot, you get soft, compliant foam beneath you, with structure along the sides where you barely notice it— resulting in propulsion without harshness.

Across more than 100 miles in this shoe, I consistently found myself running faster than planned— or faster than it even felt. A typical 7:30 paced mile dropped down to 7 flat without any additional thought or effort. I didn’t attempt any formal workouts in the Prime X Evo (mainly because tight turns can feel a bit awkward at this height), but I imagine the shoes continue to feel livelier, the faster you run.

What we don’t like about the Adidas Adizero Prime X Evo

MEG: It’s tough to criticize a shoe that’s clearly pushing the envelope in almost every direction— but if I’m going to nitpick, I do have a couple small wishes. I’d love to see just a touch of padding added to the tongue, along with the lightest gusset imaginable. Nothing that compromises the airy, stripped-down feel—just enough to provide a slightly more dialed-in sense of comfort and security.

I mentioned this in my video review as well, but part of writing this feels like a small petition to Adidas: make a version of this shoe for the masses. Running in it is such a distinct, joyful experience. Sure, it won’t be for the granola-crunching minimalist crowd— but for a huge segment of runners, I think lacing these up would feel like discovering something entirely new and exciting in running.

And by the masses, I mean, let’s find a way to make this not $500 and enough availability that people can buy it without winning the shoe release lottery.

Final thoughts on the Adidas Adizero Prime X Evo

MEG: It probably comes as no surprise that I love just about everything about this shoe. From the generous stack height to the stripped-down, minimalist build—and even the classic black-and-white colorway with that sharp pop of red—it just works. Every detail feels intentional.

I also appreciate how brands continue to push the envelope, not just with product innovation but with the athletes they support. I’ve had a glimpse at some upcoming Adidas releases that genuinely have me excited about where the brand is headed next.

So yes, if you’re someone who loves that ultra-responsive, trampoline-like ride, the Prime X Evo is an absolute banger. But if it never sees a full market release, I’m confident there’s plenty on the horizon from Adidas to be excited about.

You can pick up the Adidas Prime X Evo for $500 from adidas.com if you’re super lucky (or get a notification by signing up for AdiClub).
