And Now, We Taper

Well, some of us anyway. Many of us hit our final monster week of marathon training (and threw in a bit of a race effort at the Baltimore Running Festival), though some of us (me) decided to push their longest run to the next weekend. No worries, we’ll get there feeling good. We’re three weeks out from the New York City Marathon, and while the days have been long, the weeks have been short. We’re entering into the optimal zone of running– perfect fall temps that we hope hold up until race day.

The good news is that we’re all feeling good and relatively healthy; now, we just have to ignore the taper crazies and trust our training to get us to the start line and across the finish.

See how our training has been going.

Recovery week! I took some down time after the Chicago Marathon. Rest is always the hardest for me, but I’m feeling really good and ready to get back to the grind!

It feels good to let go and see what happens. I’m having fun running workouts instead of fearing the results of them. As a result, I am hitting the paces and surprising myself. My goal is to get to the start feeling healthy and freeing myself to run by effort. This past Saturday, I did that during the Baltimore Half Marathon. The result is satisfying. I am able to be at peace with what my mind and body were able to achieve. Regardless of an arbitrary time, I was content with how the day unfolded. I want that for NYC.

After taking off four days last week for a sprained ankle, I eased into the first part of the week by hobble-jogging my Monday and Tuesday runs. Was feeling better on Wednesday and hit the Druid Hills hard here in Baltimore, before taking it easy on Friday in the lead-up to the Baltimore Half Marathon. Ran that race as the back part of an 18-mile long run, and though I ran it comfortably hard, I felt like it was a pace I could hold for a marathon. And I finished it out with a few strong miles. Plus, that course has almost as much elevation as New York, but in half the distance. So let’s see if I can do ~7:30 for 26.2 in a few weeks!

Ahh yes, the heavy-leg-feeling, can’t-find-any-turnover part of training. Welcome back, old friend. Peak week is done, and very  excited to head into taper town; not sure why this training cycle has been so much harder than my last few. It could only mean there’s a big PR on the way!

Jarrett Weisberg

Reached my longest training run of the cycle on Saturday. Took the streets of Baltimore for 22 total miles (with 13.1 of that being the Baltimore Half Marathon) and felt pretty dang solid. I don’t want to jinx anything, but I’m feeling pretty, pretty good. Bring it on, NYC!

Didn’t do too much running this week, currently driving through the American West, spending some time exploring. New York is coming, we’ll see what happens!

Another race week! Oxford Half Marathon this time which was a cracking run and I actually felt OK despite the lack of miles due to my back! Focus this week is just on one more long run of 18 miles, then I am done and winding down to race day. More importantly I have to work out what I am wearing and bringing with me, plus how big my case should be so I can fit all the bits my girls want me to buy when I am over!

Peak week is complete! I can’t believe how fast this training cycle went. I’m sad it’s almost over but soooooo excited for the marathon! This week consisted of pretty tough workouts, but I executed them all pretty well. I don’t want to jinx it, but I feel like I’ve unlocked something in myself the last 13 weeks. I can’t wait to put it to the test come race day.

Jess Movold

Last long run in the books! Really was hoping for my 20-miler this weekend to be the workout that gave me the race day confidence I was looking for, but it was just a so-so run. More stops than I would have liked and ended up with 20 miles instead of 22. But– I know that my training isn’t about one long run in particular. It’s all of the mornings, all of the miles, all of the workouts. NYC IS COMING!! Let’s make it a party no matter what.

The first week after the Chicago Marathon was so real! I wanted to run, but my coach said rest. Then, traveling to another city I had a chance to run with a group here in Houston called ZFT. It was a great time to run with their marathon/half marathon trainees. I felt good the entire run and met some new runners along the way. Back to the grind next week with 4-5 run days to keep my stamina up for New York City. I cannot wait to meet you all.

Highlight of the week certainly was running the Chicago Marathon as part of my buildup to NYC! The weather was great, the crowds were even better. I ran with so much joy through my hometown and it got me so excited for a few more weeks of training to sharpen things up for the big apple!

Hollyn Vermillion

With more free time this week, I was able to fit in all my runs! Capped off my week with a 22 mile long run, which has been a goal of mine this whole training block. Friends have told me that the “hitting the wall” feeling usually comes around miles 20-22, so I knew this long run was important. With three more weeks to go, I’m ready to scale back the miles and mentally prepare for this marathon.

Lo Johnson

Grateful! Finished up the last Track Tuesday with the Riot Squad crew. We put in some work together, dating back to July. It felt weird saying “see you next year.” I’ll be completing my last couple of track workouts solo. I also took on my third full marathon at the Baltimore Running Festival. I’m always out to run sub-4 every time I toe the line. Still building towards that goal but I did PR so I’m happy about that. I’m locked in for NYC. Check out my IG to see what New Balance race sneaker I’ll be wearing!!
