Moving Towards the Marathon

The march towards the marathon continues. Mileage is piling up and we’re beginning to see what we’re all made of. Luckily, we have some New Balance shoes to keep us cruising at a comfortable pace on our long runs (thank you More v4 and SC Trainer v2), while we can harness some big time energy return when we need to pick up the pace (thank you SC Elite v3).

Check out each individual’s current status and follow along each week to see how we’re holding up!

Meaghan Murray

A week without any travel was nice for training! My long run (22 miles) fell on a Wednesday this week. There’s something about getting 22 miles in before a full workday that makes you feel like a boss. Also a nice change of pace with just a workout/double on Saturday. I’m hitting all my paces and racking up miles, but I’m definitely missing a bit of the mental confidence. Something to work on over the next month…

Thomas Neuberger

After a great time at the Falmouth Road Race, I felt back in the game ready to train. I also realized I love running with people. So I bit the bullet and went to the doctor this week to check out the nagging foot injury. It turns out I had a stressie in the works last Spring or early Summer, but taking steps back and riding the bike looks like it remedied the problem, and the bone has healed. So, with some precaution, I am starting my official push towards NYC! Training is my favorite part of the whole marathon experience, so let’s go. Ps- hit me up if you want to get in a long run.

Miles are slowly, but surely, moving upward. This is the one-year anniversary of carving up my left leg on a piece of stray glass, which kept me sidelined for a good 5 weeks during last year’s NYC training. For that race, I was only able to get in three long runs before the race. So while I may not have the time and life allotment to rack up huge mileage during this training cycle, I am focusing on what I can do well– executing all my scheduled long runs, better hydration and nutrition, and good sleep. This week, I was able to run 12 miles in the shade with some friends up in PA. It was a great way to get motivated and I’m looking forward to my 14 miler this weekend.

Meghann Featherstun

This week felt as fresh as that new pair of New Balance SC Trainer v2! Bouncy, supportive, and strong. My body has been extra, extra tired the past couple weeks but said bod decided to show up this week and that was a lovely surprise. I ran a tough 14 mile mid-week workout & a killer 20-miler this weekend. And I’m still standing/jumping on the trampoline with the kids so I think this is prolly a great sign.

Alison Staples

Most of my runs this week have started off with a limp because of Achilles pain. It takes about 5-ish minutes for my gait to normalize and then the pain is gone. Low again on the prescribed weekly mileage, but super glad I played it safe during the week because I had a really good long run on Sunday. Hopefully things turn around soon!

As I suspected, last week wasn’t real parenting life. With our night nurse gone, we were on our own for the middle of the night feeds. After realizing this, I spoke with Coach Meg and we came to the conclusion that having a serious training cycle right now isn’t realistic. I had to accept this and move on to a new goal of having as much fun and going with the flow. Saturday’s long run was supposed to be 15 miles and Sunday a 5 recovery, but I was so tired and couldn’t get out until the middle of the morning. Change was accepted and I switched to 10 on both Saturday and Sunday. I’m trying to get the miles any way possible!

Back in South Dakota, so it was pretty hot out there! Took some time to hit the treadmill at a local gym and get a few miles in. Taking the road less traveled for this marathon training practice. This experiment is going according to plan and training in the SC Trainer 2 has been a saving grace.

Chris Ford

A frustrating week with lower back pain sending me to the osteo! It has really restricted my running this past week and I am having to manage it. Happy to end the week with a steady 18 mile long run as the next few weekends are races including a trip with New Balance to the Big Half. This half marathon runs part of the London Marathon course and is one of the bigger half’s of the year! Fingers crossed my back settles down and I can get into some groove in this phase of training.

Emily Heller

This week started out feeling tough but ended with a solid 17 miler! I was pretty tired during the work week from a couple news events holding me at the office past 11 pm. Not to mention ‘that time of the month’ was looming over me. Despite that, I still got all my runs in. Some felt better than others, but my long run felt pretty darn good. Ran 17 E-Z miles to close out the week. I’m calling it a success!

Jess Movold

Sloooowly feeling like I’m getting into the marathon groove. It’s taken longer to mentally get into training this time around and I think the ATX heat has something to do with that. Have had a few weeks of more consistent training and less travel so things are starting to slowly feel better. My long run was a de-load week and was only supposed to be around 14 but I did a course that ended up being 17. All in all, an OK week.

Chef Joel Mays III

What a week! Teaching and running is a beast especially when it’s been 100-plus degrees each day and 85 degrees at 5 am. But I conquered my long run and recovery miles. I did some tempo work and speed intervals this week. The base is set! Time to go get that 20-mile run done. I’m excited that I ran more miles this month than I ever have before in my life: 122 and counting! That makes me feel so confident in my training and in my journey towards the start line. Let’s go! Have a great week and I’ll see you at the finish line.

Katherine Wuestenfeld

Another mileage building week and I ended it feeling surprisingly fresh and peppy. Nothing crazy impressive this week and also nothing crazy bad this week, just staying consistent and making steady progress. Next week will bring a little more intensity and I’m excited to keep chipping away at my fitness!

Marcus Fitts

Very wet week– no rain, just humidity. Had great runs except for my long run which I had to cut short and I’m still super sore from. Ramping up the volume this week and will be rotating shoes to see if it makes a difference.

Hollyn Vermillion

Back to normal training this week as the smoky skies finally cleared up. I hit my mileage goal with my favorite run of the week being my 17-mile long run workout. I was able to run my goal paces which is a real confidence booster. Ready to tackle another week of training!

Liv Paxton

Solid week of training & racing with absolutely zero time for recovery. I flew out to Oregon on Wednesday for the Hood to Coast Relay. My team (the Twelve Olivias) finished second in the women’s open division and my legs went pretty well! Now time to sleep it off and get back to training!
