Salming Miles Lite Performance Review

Salming Miles Lite

The Good

The Salming Miles Lite is an update to the Salming Miles trainer. The original Miles had some issues with the fit of the upper and weighed 11.05 oz / 313 grams. Both the fit and the weight are addressed in the latest version. The Miles Lite weighs 9.4 0z /266 grams and feels much livelier on foot. The upper lost the extra overlays and is a simple but effective mesh upper with one noticeable overlay on the toe cap. Off the bat, the shoe looks less clunky than the original. A lightly padded collar and heel counter complement the thin but cushioned tongue. Older Salming shoes had puffy tongues that sometimes stuck up high. The Miles Lite sits nice and low blending in with the collar. This shoe has the “No nonsense” mantra built-in; it’s a pretty simple upper.

The midsole has a stack of 23 mm center of the heel, 19 mm ball of the foot, if you aren’t great at math, that is a 4mm drop.  Salming uses its proprietary RECOIL™+SoftFOAM™ to provide the cushioning for the Miles Lite. The cushioning is firm but forgiving. The Miles Lite isn’t a soft shoe; it is built for a runner that likes feedback from the road. The RECOIL foam also gives a little snap to the toe off. There is plenty of durable rubber on the outsole, so durability and traction should not be an issue.

I feel the shoe tips into the preformance training shoe category now. It is way better for me then EnRoute and Speed. A few changes with the rubber, would make the shoe a killer……the rubber is actually very slippery when wet…. –Stefan Albinsson

The Bad

I have concluded that I need to go with a half size smaller in Salming across the board. I have almost an inch and a quarter from my big toe to the tip of the Miles Lite.

The Salming Miles Lite Conclusion

The Miles Lite is a no-frills daily trainer. I recommend it to runners looking for a shoe that is good for any distance and prefer a firmer feel underfoot. It isn’t a bad firm; it provides the cushioning your legs need without being mushy and energy sucking. You will want to half size down to get the right fit. Similar shoes include Nike Pegasus 35, Asics Roadhawk FF 2, 361º Spire 3, and the Salomon Sonic RA.
