Merging the mountain minds

TAYLOR: Collab culture gives us the quick hits we think we want in a certain time and space. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely appreciate a well-executed collaboration. Like their frequency, though, they fade quickly.

While collabs can be tricky to nail, timelessness is even harder to create. That phrase is somewhat contradictory; yet, in some ways, both Norda and Black Diamond have achieved that on a brand level.

Norda, a Canadian-based company, was born at a unique intersection of class and rugged mountain performance. Founders Nick and Willa started with a tasteful silhouette and wrapped it with the finest of materials. It’s actually not a foolproof tactic for performance, but they made it work with their first-ever release, the Norda 001. From that shoe alone, and through a genuine love for the mountains and a keen eye for quality, their success has transcended our sport of trail running. They’ve continued to build a legacy with other footwear and clothing offerings.

Black Diamond is also a North American brand steeped in mountain performance, from climbing to trekking, and more recently, to running. Their products ooze quality that is 100% practical for rugged adventures. Athlete and mountain enthusiast Joe Grant has pushed their running sector to new heights, both literally and figuratively.

It was Joe’s experience and initiative that led to this project.

Where this collaboration takes a turn for the better is in the “partnership” mindset. This may be the first collection we have seen between the two brands, but it won’t be the last. They are committed to bringing more authentic gear for the mountain goer’s pride and pleasure.

Take a gander at what this inaugural launch between Black Diamond and Norda has to offer.

Norda x Black Diamond 000

Price: $295

Best For

Mountain running

Key Features

Vibram Stream Flow midsole, Vibram Megagrip Litebase Outsole, Dyneema upper, cushioned heel collar

Fit

Secure, recommend going up a half size

TAYLOR: Norda footwear is known for its extreme durability, comfort, and classy design. The Norda x Black Diamond 000 brings all that to the table and a little bit more mountain attitude.

This 000 design is something we’ve hoped for since the first two models Norda released, the Norda 001 and the Norda 002. Here we basically get the comfort and durability of the first with the security and nimble performance of the second. Practically, that means less worrying about the shoe and more focus on the technical trail below your feet.

While we’ll have the little details and our honest opinions about performance in a full review soon, know that our initial runs are quite positive about this model. A more cushioned heel construction (similar to the 002), full Dyneema (most durable woven fiber), and Fitlock system ensure comfort and protection up top. Underfoot, an updated Vibram Stream Flow midsole has similar characteristics to the OG Norda 001 at a stack height that’s completely functional and fun for technical terrain. At the very bottom, a trusted full-rubber Vibram Megagrip outsole with 5mm lugs offers multi-terrain and multi-conditions grip.

A couple of subtly bold colorways are available, including Kunzite (pictured here), Obsidian, and Moonstone.

Norda x Black Diamond Distance 15 Pack

Price: $299

Best For

Long runs when you need some extra gear

Key Features

Updated lightweight vest system, waterproof Challenge Sailcloth 100D material, roll-top pouch closure

Fit

Snug, vest-like

TAYLOR: We’ve loved every version of the Black Diamond Distance pack. From 2L to 22L, they offer the ability to tote your trail gear across the mountains at runnable speeds. Not only do you get its dependability with this collab, but this version comes in a Glacier Grey color with Kunzite accents that’s simply beautiful.

The 15L pack is one of the most versatile options to bring the necessary items for big mountain days plus a little more. The vest-like fit is paramount for confident movement. Lightweight shoulder straps hug around your shoulders and directly under the arms. Even fully-loaded, the Black Diamond Distance 15 flows with the body for control on technical and non-technical terrain alike.

Another element that stands out in this particular version is the durable waterproof material that protects the pack. Challenge Sailcloth 100D is one of the few fabrics that can match durability with Dyneema in a lightweight, flexible application. Again, that means fabric that is gram-for-gram 15 times stronger than steel.

Plan on owning this pack for your lifetime plus.

Norda x Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z FKT Poles

Price: $280

Best For

Steep climbs and saving weight

Key Features

Carbon shafts, Z-pole construction, Speed Cone technology, quick-connect glove strap

Fit

Adjustable

TAYLOR: My first pair of trekking poles was Black Diamond’s original aluminum Z-Poles. While those are still around and completely ready to tackle whatever, these updated Distance Carbon Z FKT Poles absolutely feel like an upgrade. Better yet, they can go toe-to-toe with some of our favorites in the running pole category on every performance aspect.

Their snappy lightweight construction and easy-to-assemble Speed Cone technology make these an easy accessory to sheath as needed.

The updated Carbon Z FKT Poles include a glove system that levels up energy and accuracy every time you plant your poles. As Alex mentioned in our original review, “…the magnetic quick-connect system felt smooth and intuitive…”; however, the system had a couple of hiccups with fatigue and waning mental capacity.

Norda x Black Diamond Deploy Down 0.5 Full Zip Hoody

Price: $549

TAYLOR: One of the most underrated pieces of gear to have along in the mountains is a down jacket. Those puff balls pack a powerful punch of warmth that can’t be beat. The typical friction point for runners is that these jackets, as packable as they are, can still be on the bulky end compared to what we’re used to carrying.

Let’s meet in the middle, says Black Diamond. The Deploy Down 0.5 Full Zip Hoody is ultra lightweight and extremely packable so that we runners can take it anywhere. It balls up to literally half the size of my other puffers, making it one I’ll actually consider throwing in the pack.

At a measly 160 grams, the 1,000-fill synthetic down still provides noticeable heat and fits under a waterproof jacket better than all of my other down pieces.

In the Glacier Grey color, this Norda x Black Diamond piece looks as sleek as it performs. The Deploy 0.5 has a solid case for making the cut for adventures. After all, the best jacket is the one you bring with you. Can I get an amen?

Norda x Black Diamond T-Shirt and Cap

Price: $95 (T-Shirt), $85 (Cap)

TAYLOR: These last couple of items might feel a little extra. They are casual and basic, but that’s where Norda always goes the extra mile. These are tastefully done and of the utmost quality. They look it, feel it. Simple as that.
