I've run in Altra's latest racing shoe, and this is its biggest strength

Introduction to the Altra Vanish Carbon 3

RYAN: Historically, I've wanted one thing from my race day shoes: A lean, mean fit. Alright, two things, because I also need a metric ton of energy return. I want something that's going to give back what I put in, and I want it to make me feel secure along the way. So, it should come as no surprise that I didn't run in either the Vanish Carbon or the Vanish Carbon 2.

But when Altra invited me out to Denver to run around a rooftop track and test out the third generation of its racing platform, I had to say yes. I'd seen the leaks on Reddit (is it really a leak if it's from World Athletics?), and it seemed like Altra was ready to come into its own on the racing stage. I saw cushioning, a rocker, and a clean yet aggressive upper.

To me, it sounded like a racing shoe I might love. How it would go down for Altra fans, however, seemed like another matter entirely. Yes, it has the wide toe box they're sure to love, but I didn't believe for a second I was headed out west to try a zero-drop race day shoe. I simply couldn't look at this stack and this rocker and think that the heel matched the forefoot.

Is it really an Altra racing shoe if it has a 4mm drop? In 2026, the answer is yes.

I was right; it doesn't. The Vanish Carbon 3 is Altra's first race day offering with a slight 4mm heel-to-toe drop in its maxed-out stack of PEBA-based Fast RCE foam. Also within that monstrous 40mm stack lies a patent-pending split carbon fiber plate, and it rides on a lattice of generous (but not overwhelming) outsole rubber.

So, with the sun rising over the Mile-High City, it was time to find out if I could shed my wide toe box worries and enjoy an all-new racing experience.

Spoiler: I could.

What we like about the Altra Vanish Carbon 3

RYAN: There are a lot of places I could start when it comes to what I like about this shoe, but let's start with the obvious one: The midsole. Altra has finally realized that PEBA foam offers the goods in terms of bounce and energy return, and it's brought new life into the Vanish Carbon series. Fast RCE is bouncy, responsive, and all-around better than the Ego Pro compound from its predecessor — or so I've been told.

From the minute I laced up the Vanish Carbon 3's sawtooth laces and began to jog around the tiniest three-lane track you've ever seen, I could tell this was a wide toe box beast of a different kind. It rolled me from one foot to the next, practically begging me to pick up the pace. I didn't really want to at first — the tiny track felt like 75% turns — but as Altra athlete Nell Rojas walked us through a workout, I felt like I had no choice.

I pushed the wide platform up to about 10K pace (roughly a 6:30), hit the corner and... just kept rolling. One curve turned into two, which turned into three, and suddenly I was back where I started, ankles perfectly intact. I'm not used to such a sensation around tight corners, yet the Vanish Carbon 3 made me feel like I could take the tiny track aggressively.

The reason why, of course, becomes evident as soon as you look down. This is one incredibly wide platform. The Fast RCE foam bulges out around the midfoot and extends beyond the heel, giving you an absolutely massive base to land on. And, with lateral foam to stabilize you, it's a lot easier to push into the bends.

I'm not used to being aggressive around corners, but I have to say I like the feeling.

Of course, with a rocker this extreme and a stack this tall, the Vanish Carbon 3 isn't just good around corners. Back home in Baltimore, I pushed the shoe through medium-long runs (up to around 14 miles) on my way into the fall marathon season, and I felt like it encouraged me to just keep going. The PEBA remains light and bouncy, and the ample outsole coverage ensures that I can hit the often wet stretches of the promenade without issue.

Moving up, Altra did a good job of balancing protection with lightweight racing materials throughout the upper. The heel collar is about as plush as can be for a racing shoe, which just means it's not sharp and didn't destroy my ankle. At the front, Altra's engineered mesh is so wide and breathable that you'll see your sock through the toe box, so make sure you pick a good one.

What we don't like about the Altra Vanish Carbon 3

RYAN: While I'll give Altra a lot of credit for improving the ride and the turnover of the Vanish Carbon 3, and I really like what the team is doing with its split carbon fiber plate, my problem with wide toe box shoes remains the same: I don't like toe splay when I'm going fast.

I had this problem with the first two iterations of the Topo Athletic Specter, and I have it here. My heel and midfoot feel plenty secure, but my narrow-to-normal forefoot feels like it's swimming up front. I don't like anything that makes me feel like my toes are sliding around, because in my mind, that means a chance for blisters.

That is, of course, a personal preference, but my other issue with the Vanish Carbon 3 will probably impact more runners. In my experience, there's just not quite enough tongue here to stay lashed over the top of my foot. Once I tightened the laces, I felt like the paper-thin tongue began to slip down over the top of my foot, inching ever closer to the knot I'd so carefully tied.

Altra truthers will also probably take issue with the shoe's 4mm drop, but let's be honest: Road racing is best done with a slight offset. Altra's decision to change from zero-drop race shoes to 4mm came out of input from its stable of pros, who quickly realized they felt slightly more efficient at race speeds when they could roll through the rocker and bounce off their toes with a slight offset.

Final thoughts on the Altra Vanish Carbon 3

RYAN: At the end of the day, this is Altra's best, most capable race shoe to date. It's also the least Altra-like race shoe the company has ever made. The 4mm drop will feel like a departure for fans of the brand's previous racers, but I promise it makes the shoe more efficient when you inch up to marathon pace.

Besides, as it stands, this is one of the most aggressively priced race day shoes on the market. As the competition inches up towards the $300 mark (even TYR demands $280 for its new Valkyrie Elite v2), the Vanish Carbon 3 sits at an almost unheard-of $240. Now you can take those savings and put them towards a box of gels for your next race.

But if you're after a racing shoe with a wide toe box, you now have a decision to make: Do you stick with Altra, the originator, or do you try the Topo Athletic Specter Elite? That shoe offers a similar design, but offers a more durable ATPU midsole and actually weighs less for just $10 more. I haven't run in the Specter Elite, but I reckon it's worth a shot if you can find it in stock.
