ALEX: The Allbirds Wool Dasher Mizzles are neutral cushioning running shoes designed to meet the needs of casual runners. Upon finding this out I naturally started to take online quizzes to see what kind of runner I am. The consensus: not a casual runner. For weeks, I wore this shoe around the house, to the office, for long walks and short runs.

New to the performance game, Allbirds released their first running shoe in 2020. My knowledge of Allbirds up to this point was limited to the occasional ‘World’s Most Comfortable Shoe’ Instagram ad. And now that you’re reading this you are sure to be their next target. I learned by clicking on said ad that the Wool Dasher Mizzle is carbon neutral as a result of using natural materials and carbon credits.

The Good

ALEX: This water-repellent sneaker has a grippy rubber outsole and a knit sock collar to protect against the cold. Right out of the box, it was like I was holding what could only be the offspring of a Glerup and a Nike Free. I wear them around as a go-to daily shoe, but it feels like an outdoor slipper.

I was pleasantly surprised by how well they protected my feet from slushy, wet paths. The Wool Dasher Mizzle upper is made of merino wool with a bio-based shield treated with fluorine-free water-repellent coating. They have a mid-cut knit sock collar to keep warmth in and debris out. While I tested mine with socks, Allbirds invites buyers to forego socks with these shoes.

Once I got the lacing right, I found that I could slip these on and off without untying them. And just like your favorite pair of slippers, these are so damn comfortable. They feel great right out of the box, with no break-in period required. The ZQ merino wool is soft, itch-free, and looks great. Not to mention a nice wide toe box.

The Wool Dasher Mizzle has a responsive feel to it. The dual-density SweetFoam midsole is made with carbon-negative green EVA that has ample cushion, a stable feel and great energy return.

The Bad

ALEX: My feet get really warm, and the reinforced wool upper is too warm for me to run in unless it’s an easy effort and/or winter. I didn’t run more than 3 miles at a time in the Wool Dasher Mizzles. I’d stick with walking and short runs in these.

The unstructured upper doesn’t give my foot a lot of security and is another reason this will not be a go-to shoe for mid to long-distance, or fast road miles.

Allbirds Wool Dasher Mizzles Conclusion

ALEX: I’ve barely taken off the Allbirds Wool Dasher Mizzoles since getting them. They look great, are extremely comfortable, and their casual look and practical design make them a shoe that you can wear all day. While these are not going to be your next high mileage trainer, they’re a great eco-conscious option that will support easy shake-out runs, long walks, and travel.
