Dreaming of a Grey Spring

The color gray is a funny thing. If you’re Wide-foot Jarrett, it’s your worst enemy. You’re so sick of the color gracing 2E shoe after 2E shoe that you’re willing to take up tie-dye to change it. But if you’re the rest of us, you probably like gray at least a little bit. It’s the perfect color for sweatpants, and with the right heathering, it makes a t-shirt that you can keep for years and years.

And, if you’re New Balance, the grey is the thing. It’s the signature, the go-to hue. Spelled the fancy (British) way, New Balance has been using grey since the 80’s as a toned-down option for urban runners, while all its competitors were embracing the loud and the neon to stand out. These days, everyone uses gray and neon, but New Balance still maintains a special relationship with the simplest of shades.

So, it’s time once again for the unofficial holiday in celebration of that signature hue. The Grey Days are upon us once more, and it wouldn’t have felt like Spring without them.

Familiar Faces, Familiar Hues

The thing about the color gray is that it blends in just as much as it stands out. You can glance at it and not think twice, or you can let it hold your attention the whole time it’s passing by you. For New Balance, this campaign is about a little bit of both.

On the one hand, you have silhouettes like the 574, which look like the very picture of an understated everyday shoe. If you were asked to draw a sneaker, you’d probably come up with something similar. It’s a simple elegance that works on everything from that 574 to the brand-new 1080v15 with its updated TPEE-based Infinion foam, and isn’t far off the understated colorways that Distric Vision introduced to the SC Elite v5 last year.

But when you put these silhouettes (and accompanying apparel) on the feet of New Balance athletes and partners like Aminé, Quincy Wilson, and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, it’s impossible for the grey not to stand out. It’s a familiar color presented in an all-new way each year, tying the 80’s to the present in a way that just kinda works.

New Balance Grey Days Availability

The Grey Days campaign is bigger than ever this year, with 12 silhouettes launching throughout May. For runners, the list of options is short yet sweet: the Rebel v5 and 1080v15. But if you’ve been waiting for a chance at a clean New Balance Numeric shoe, you’ll be able to pick through the likes of the Andrew Reynolds 993, Tiago Lemos 1010, and the 770 (though the last of those won’t launch until May 22).

Otherwise, New Balance will drop the Abzorb 2010, 2000, 5030, and 1890 between May 8 and 15. The Abzorb line resurrects the early 2000’s midsole technology, adding a new visual element to some of the cleanest numeric silhouettes.

The Grey Days collection will launch via NewBalance.com, at New Balance stores, and with select retail partners throughout May 2026, and will be priced between $40 and $180.
