Back in the fall of 2016 Thomas and I visited a local fitness/nutrition/wellness instructor (Jason Williams) who was offering 30-minute one-on-one foam rolling sessions. It sounded horribly painful, so naturally, we booked two spots. He introduced us to the magical ensō roller.
What makes the ensō roller different from any other foam roller? To start, it’s totally customizable. The ensō is basically an aluminum tube with eight foam discs that you can move around, take off, etc. The idea is that you can use the same device on all different parts of your body by putting it into different configurations. You can configure it to target knots on your back, adjust the discs to roll out both legs or use it as a hand-held to target specific areas. Really, everything and anything. EvoFit does a great job of showing you how to configure the roller to target the hip area, back, hamstrings, quads, calves and IT band on their website. You can check it out, here.
I personally think this is a foam roller to replace all (or most) other foam rollers. You no longer need a lacrosse ball, rumble roller, grid roller and whatever else you have lying around in your house. The ensō roller can be used to massage an entire area or pinpoint knots and dig in from there. Another added benefit of the design? You can take it apart and travel with it. We packed this with us for a trip down to FL.
I’m personally a big fan of the ensō roller. The only negative thing I have to say is that it’s a little more “harsh” than your standard trigger point roller. It definitely takes a little getting used to.
If you’re in the market for a foam roller, give these guys a look. The price point of $49.99 (as of May 1, 2017), isn’t much higher than other rollers in the industry and it will last forever. Plus, you won’t have to purchase multiple rollers.
