Altra x And Wander Lone Peak 9+

A Trail Icon Meets Tokyo Design

Outdoor footwear is no longer confined to the mountains. With the rise of gorpcore dovetailing with a surge in trail running, the style is just as likely to be seen on the streets of Tokyo, Berlin, or New York as it is on the mountains. Altra has entered this cultural overlap this year with a share of under-the-radar successful collaborations, most notably with Italian label Roa, and the previous Timp 5 with And Wander. The new version of the Lone Peak 9+ continues as a statement about where Altra sees itself in the evolving outdoor market.

Two Worlds

Altra was born in Utah with a clear mission: build shoes that promote natural movement. Its Zero Drop™ platform and FootShape™ design made the brand a go-to for trail runners and hikers, with the Lone Peak becoming its signature model.

And Wander, founded in 2011 by Keita Ikeuchi and Mihoko Mori after stints at Issey Miyake, takes the opposite approach. The label’s appeal comes from balancing fashion aesthetics with functional gear. Their collections show that technical clothing and accessories don’t have to look purely utilitarian. In partnering with Altra, and Wander brings design credibility that resonates with audiences who see outdoor gear as part of their lifestyle, not just their kit.

What’s Different This Time

Presented as an official part of the Japanese label’s fall-winter collection, The Lone Peak 9+ represents a first for Altra: graphics. For a brand that built its reputation on technical purity, this signals a willingness to embrace design experimentation. The shoe upgrades to Vibram Megagrip, a sole compound known for dependable traction on wet and uneven terrain. This isn’t a style-over-substance project– it’s both.

Altra’s brand president Jennifer McLaren framed the collaboration as a way to align performance design with self-expression. At the same time, And Wander co-founder Ikeuchi described it as reinterpreting proven outdoor tools. Both perspectives point to a broader ambition of all brands right now: reaching consumers who move between trail, street, and everyday life without changing their footwear.

Why It Matters

Outdoor footwear is one of the fastest-growing categories, driven by consumers who want gear that works on trails but also feels at home in the city. At $185, the shoe sits above the standard Lone Peak price, positioning it as a premium option. The unisex red and black colorways strike a balance: subtle enough for traditional trail users, distinct sufficient to attract design-conscious buyers.

This collaboration doesn’t radically reinvent the Lone Peak, but it does reframe how Altra can operate in a space increasingly shaped by collaborations between technical and fashion labels. It’s less about a one-off product and more about signaling Altra’s openness to a broader cultural conversation.
